Artist Statement

I look at art like it is conversation between the artist, the concept and the material. Painting is how I listen to that conversation, how I heal from loss and how I celebrate life. Painting is an act of healing. My work exists where grief meets grace, and where memory becomes a form of ministry. The natural progression of my body of work has led me to paint portraits, but more specifically, memorial paintings as a process in grief work. I create using materials like watercolor, wine, and ground manna – elements chosen for their symbolism. Water for renewal and cleansing. Wine for sacrifice and communion. Manna for divine provision. All materials serve as a reminder that we have the innate ability to harness our gift; to create as we are in the image of God and to remember that life continues after death.

Through these materials, I build layers that breathe – a dialogue between heaven and earth. The process is slow, is often aligned to the stages of grief, and is intimate. The brushstrokes become offerings of serenity and healing. I create to honor the testimonies of ones life- even if the art itself is fleeting and doesn’t last forever, the subjects remain eternal.
